3 Hour Taxi

I think this trip will set a few records in the ‘Life of Scott’. 5 flights, 72 hours of traveling, and a 3 hour taxi ride-just to get there. Oh- and Africa. That is a first as well. But the taxi…

People say I am ‘cheap’, but I prefer ‘opportunistic’. So, when the overbooked airline asked for volunteers to take a different flight, (in exchange for a $500 flight voucher! And free food!) your’s truly was first in line (also the only person in line…). There were so many delays at my local airport, American hired a cab for me and three soon-to-be-friends, to take us to Grand Rapids. My new friends had been at the airport for 48 hours waiting for the delays to clear. We had a great ride (ie. I slept most of the way) and now I am in Dubai waiting for plane 4 of 5. In light of recent events, I would say life, particularly a life following Jesus, is a bit the taxi ride.

There are some awesome ‘alternate’ paths to those willing to say yes to odd propositions. I suppose Africa could be one of those paths. It started with a innocent phone call to thank Bob for his book, and before I knew it, I was offered the chance to serve fairly long term in Uganda. Uganda. “Sure…it is in Central Africa-right”? (I later confirmed that it was…this could be a sign of how few details I know)

This trip is about figuring out what I have gotten myself into. For the next few weeks I will hang out in Gulu, Uganda and see what Restore International (also known as Love Does-don’t worry, I am confused as well…) is up to.

There are so many unanswered questions, and to be honest, I do not think all of them will be answered soon. But that is alright, and probably a good sign. Jesus did not make a habit of giving His first followers a written agenda, and why do I think things are different now?

I was confused when no one else took the airline up on their offer; the opportunity to earn $150 an hour. But maybe I can see why-there were some unknowns and a inconvenience. But no one ever said the best route would be clear and orderly. Anyway, I am sure the next few weeks will provide some interesting stories to share!
